3 Innovations That Originated From Space Exploration

New discoveries, improvements and innovations to everyday items and processes come from surprising sources. Some of them even originate from sophisticated technology used by NASA. From the US space race Florida of the past to modern exploration, these advancements have served astronauts and now help civilians with their daily routine.

    1. Wireless Headsets

Music players and their corresponding headsets were once larger and more cumbersome than today’s versions. Wireless sets eliminate those issues and make the experience more pleasant. Both airline and NASA engineers created the predecessor to these devices in 1961 when they took the strong and comfortable technology made by the former and turned it into a portable two-way communicator. The headset was used in both the Apollo and Mercury missions.

    1. House Insulation

These days, insulation is essential to every house, as it helps maintain a desirable temperature inside the building and can help save money normally spent on heating and air conditioning. While construction insulation existed much earlier, great developments were spearheaded by NASA’s quest to create a stable spacecraft temperature that protected astronauts from the cold space. Today’s homeowners can use improvements like radiant barriers to keep a strong home temperature.

    1. Freeze-Dried Foods

Storing food is a major challenge in space travel due to the limited space and the difficulty in balancing preservation and taste. While there have been previous attempts such as paste and dehydration, freeze-drying keeps food items light while also retaining freshness, nutritional value and flavor. Under this method, the food is frozen, then the ice is removed by placing it on a strong vacuum that evaporates the water inside. Freeze-drying is not just used for space travel, but also to preserve ordinary fruits, meat and coffee.

Space exploration not only teaches mankind more about anything beyond Earth’s boundaries, but it also encourages other discoveries. This technology not only assists astronauts but also people’s ordinary lives.
