Chipped Tooth? Here’s What You Should Do

Enamel is what protects our teeth. This hard, mineralized outer shell of our teeth is one of the most durable things in the human body. Despite its strength, it might still be injured, especially for British Columbians who like outdoor sports such as skiing, snowboarding, and mountain biking.

Chips, cracks, and fractured teeth might be the consequence of an injury or normal wear and tear.

If one of your teeth is injured, you should visit a dentist immediately. A chipped or cracked tooth may cause sensitivity, discomfort, swelling, and irritation. If left untreated, it can cause dental decay, gum disease, and tooth loss. You can speak to a dentist in Kelowna BC to learn more.

How do you know if you have a chipped tooth?

First, determine if you have a broken or chipped tooth. While it is quite simple to spot a fractured tooth in the front of your mouth, here are some other signs you should keep an eye out for, especially for those teeth you can not see easily:

    • Sudden sensitivity to cold foods or beverages.
    • Rubbing against the rough surface of a tooth irritates the tongue.
    • Pain while chewing or applying pressure on the teeth.
    • An inflamed gum line surrounds one tooth.
    • When you feel the tooth’s surface with your tongue, you may feel a rough, uneven, or jagged edge.

    What causes a chipped tooth?

A chipped tooth can result from a variety of causes, including biting into a hard piece of sweets or a minor accident. Knowing the probable reasons allows you to take precautionary steps in the future.

For example, you might chip your teeth while playing sports, both contact and non-contact. If you do not wear a mouthguard while playing, you are more likely to have a broken tooth at the conclusion of the game. You may bite on anything hard, such as sweets or a chunk of ice. Nipping at chicken ribs or wings on the bone might also result in a chipped tooth.

Certain injuries may also result in a fractured tooth. Wear your seatbelt when in a moving car. Wearing comfortable shoes and being aware of your surroundings might help you avoid stumbling.

Some people utilize their teeth as their primary tool. For example, you could use your teeth to open a bottle. However, this may force you to press your teeth together, resulting in a chipped tooth.

    Visit your dentist immediately.

If you have a broken or chipped tooth, the most essential thing you can do is take action. Call your dentist’s office right away and attempt to make an appointment. Additionally, if a bit of your natural tooth is missing, try to keep it secure and bring it to your dentist. In the interim, you can manage your discomfort with over-the-counter pain medicines and soft meals.
