    Roof Snow Removal Tips

Winter in many parts of the country brings some significant snowfall. When snow builds up on your roof, it can lead to a variety of issues, such as roof failure and falling debris hazards.

To avoid issues, you should clean your roof off if you have a good amount of snow covering it. Here are some tips for roof snow removal.

    Work on the Ground

The National Association of Realtors explains that if you want to remove the snow yourself, only do so from ground level. Trying to climb is too risky if you do not have the proper tools and safety gear. This should be effective if you have a one-story house. For higher roofs, you should call a professional.

Don’t Worry About Removing It All

When cleaning your roof, keep in mind that you don’t have to remove every bit of snow. You just need to lighten the load by removing the bulk of the weight. You are fine to leave areas that you cannot reach easily, and you can leave a layer of snow on the roof.

    Find Out Your Snow Load

Every roof is different in how much weight it can accommodate. To save yourself time and energy, make sure that you use a roof snow load calculator to figure out what your roof can handle. Once you know, you will be able to better schedule your snow removal before it becomes a serious threat to your roof.

    Know Where It Will Fall

Before you begin cleaning off your roof, make sure you know where the snow will land. You want to be sure it won’t damage anything on the ground as it comes off the roof. Also, be aware that you may not be able to completely control the falling snow, so ensure that you protect windows and other fragile things from potential damage.

    Assess Before Starting

Before you begin any removal, you need to assess the snow on the roof. Check if there is also ice. You may want to remove icicles from gutters and downspouts first as they could pose a safety risk. You also need to make sure there are not ice blocks within the snow that could be dangerous. It’s important to know what you are dealing with so you can stay safe.

    Let It Snow

Most of the time, you won’t have to worry about cleaning the snow off your roof, but if you are having a bad winter with heavy snowfall, then you need to stay on top of things. Roof collapses don’t happen often due to snow, but they are a serious issue that you want to avoid.
