Maintaining your oral hygiene requires many things, like brushing, flossing, and staying away from things that harm your teeth or gums. Flossing is very important as it will help you clear the food particles or plaque surrounding your teeth. It is a very necessary activity to make sure that your oral hygiene is in proper condition.

Flossing is of two types. One is traditional string flossing, which was done by people years ago, and the second and modern way to floss is water flossing, in which a device will spray water in the cracks of your teeth, and the unwanted things in that crack will get cleared automatically. Hear from the experts at the dentist in Knoxville about the details of both types and which one is better for you in which condition.

    Understanding The String Flossing

String flossing is the traditional and old way to floss your teeth. This type involves a string that goes into the cracks of the teeth easily where toothbrush bristles can not reach and clean that crack of plaque and other unwanted materials.

There are some advantages of string flossing:  it can remove plaque properly from the gaps between teeth, and it also keeps your gumline clean, protecting your gums from getting infected by something; it is easy to use and also available almost everywhere, making it easy to find and use.

There are also some disadvantages to string flossing, like every other thing in the world. The major drawback is you have to know the technique of using a string of floss before using this, and this is something not everybody knows. If you use this in the wrong way, it can injure your gumline, which will make your gums irritating, and it is not healthy in the long run. People with braces and limited dexterity find using this type of flossing very difficult as it is not suitable for their condition.

    Understanding Water Flossing

First of all, you should know how water flossing works to understand it completely. It is also called oral irrigation, in which they use a device that sprays the water with a specific force and trajectory to clean plaque and other unwanted things. The water stream is not too fast to hurt your gums and not too slow to not be able to clean anything by it.

There are a lot of advantages to this procedure. It is very comfortable and user-friendly, and the water stream is so gentle that it does not cause your gums to bleed; it is also nice for gum irritation; there are some studies that have proved that water flossing is more effective than string flossing in removing plaque.

There are also some disadvantages to water flossing, such as not being cost-friendly to many users, as it is relatively very expensive to string floss. They are also not available everywhere, such as string floss, which makes it very difficult to find. They also require regular maintenance, unlike traditional floss, and that might be hard for some people as it wastes so much of their time.

    Now, Which One Is Better?

After understanding both of the types of flossing, deciding which one is better for you is the most important thing. If we compare them in terms of effectiveness, string floss is more useful in cases of gingivitis, and water floss is way more effective in removing plaque. In terms of cost, traditional floss is way cheaper and available than water floss. So, if you do not have a problem with spending money, you can go for water floss. If you want to save money, string floss is the better option for you.

    Speak to a Professional

After considering everything given above, you should go to a dentist and inform him correctly about your oral condition and your dietary habits; he will, as a professional, give you the right advice on whether string floss or water floss.
