Selling Digital Products: How to Start and Actually Make Money

Selling digital products is one of the smartest businesses you can start today. With no inventory or shipping, you can make the same sale an unlimited number of times. Products that sell best right now include Notion templates, Canva packs, and Lightroom presets.

The barrier to entry is low, but the difference between people who earn nothing and those who earn consistently comes down to one thing: solving a specific problem for a specific audience. Vague products do not sell. Targeted ones do.

What Counts as a Digital Product?

Anything delivered digitally that provides value. The categories are broader than most people think:

    • Templates: Notion, Canva, Excel, PowerPoint, resume templates
    • Educational content: Online courses, eBooks, guides, mini-courses, cheat sheets
    • Creative assets: Stock photos, fonts, icon packs, Lightroom presets, music loops
    • Software tools: Plugins, scripts, apps, browser extensions, spreadsheet automations
    • Memberships: Paid newsletters, private communities, subscription content libraries

Best Digital Products to Sell in 2026

Product Type Startup Effort Earning Potential Best Platform
Notion Templates Low $500-$5K/month Gumroad, Etsy, own website
Canva Templates Low-Medium $300-$3K/month Etsy, Creative Market, Gumroad
Online Courses High $1K-$50K/month Teachable, Kajabi, Gumroad
Lightroom / Capture One Presets Medium $500-$8K/month Etsy, own website
Excel / Google Sheets Tools Medium $1K-$10K/month Gumroad, Etsy, AppSumo
Paid Newsletter / Community Ongoing Variable – scales with audience Substack, Beehiiv, Circle

    Where to Sell: Platform Comparison

Gumroad: The easiest starting point. Free to set up, charges a transaction fee per sale. Good for templates, guides, and anything simple. Handles delivery, tax, and payment automatically.

Etsy: Large built-in audience actively searching for digital downloads. Best for templates and creative assets. More competitive than Gumroad but discovery is much easier early on.

Teachable / Kajabi: Built specifically for courses and memberships. More setup required, monthly fees, but much better course experience for students and better analytics for you.

Your own website (Shopify or WordPress + WooCommerce): Maximum control, no platform risk, better margins. The right move once you have proven demand somewhere else first.

How to Price Your Digital Products

    • Do not undercut yourself – a $5 template signals low value. $27-$47 for a solid template is where sweet spots often land.
    • Anchor pricing works well: offer a single product for $29, a bundle for $49, and a full pack for $79. Most people buy the middle option.
    • Courses can be priced much higher ($97-$497) if they promise a specific outcome. Vague courses sell poorly at any price.
    • Test pricing – start at a mid-range price, not the lowest. You can always discount later, but raising prices is harder.

How to Get Your First Sale

The biggest mistake beginners make is creating the product first and then figuring out marketing. Reverse it.

    • Validate first: Post in relevant communities (Reddit, Facebook groups, Twitter) asking if people would pay for what you are building
    • Build an audience first – even 200 engaged followers converts better than a store with zero traffic
    • Use Etsy for early traction: the search traffic is free and the audience is already buying digital products
    • Give one away free in exchange for an honest review – social proof matters enormously for digital products

    Biggest Beginner Mistakes

    • Building for everyone: A resume template for ‘professionals’ sells worse than one for ‘nurses applying to hospital admin roles’
    • Skipping the sales page: A bad product page kills great products. Spend as much time on the description and preview images as on the product itself.
    • Not protecting files: Add basic copy protection or watermarks, but do not over-engineer it – determined pirates will always find a way
    • Giving up after week two: Most digital product shops take 3-6 months to gain traction. The ones that survive that window often grow fast after it.
