To keep your pistols working right, you are going to want to take care of them. There are a few things you are going to want to do regularly.

    Servicing Your Pistol

If you are using your pistol heavily, you should have it serviced periodically. Be sure to take it to an appropriate gunsmith, so Glocks go to a certified Glock gunsmith. This is a lot better for it than letting your buddy work on it. It would help if you also took it to an accredited gunsmith anytime it breaks.

    Cleaning Your Handgun

Properly cleaning your pistol will prevent it from rusting and remove any debris that can affect how it operates. Step one is always to make sure that your gun is unloaded. Then, you can dry fire it and begin the cleaning process. Field strip it every time you clean it. This means that you take it apart into its four main components, rather than leaving it in one piece. Be sure to clean each part thoroughly. Run a cleaning patch with solvent down the barrel and wipe the outside. Use a toothbrush and get into all the little crevices of your slide. While you’re at it, scrub the inside of the receiver too. When you have finished cleaning everything, reassemble your pistol and check to make sure it works.

It is best if you clean your gun before you fire it for the first time, after each time it is fired, and anytime you expose it to the elements. If you don’t use your pistol for long periods, you should clean it once a month, even if you don’t fire it. Every time you clean it, you should also check all of the parts to make sure they look sound.

It is also important to lubricate your pistol after each cleaning. Use a high-quality oil to keep your gun well-conditioned. Your owner’s manual will tell you how and where to lubricate your firearm. Be sure to apply the correct amount of lubrication. Using too much can affect your pistol’s performance.

    Storing Your Pistol

Be sure to store all of your handguns safely. This is not only part of being a responsible gun owner, but it can also protect your pistol.

If you take care of your pistol, it can last you a lifetime. Remember to keep it serviced, clean it regularly, and store it safely to keep your handgun at its peak performance.
